Background: JALFPV has been flying for 3.5 years. His journey began with a toy photography drone, which he quickly fell in love with. After losing video signal while flying around his house, JALFPV researched how to increase range and discovered Bardwell diving the tree at his house. This revelation made him realize that he wasn’t flying the quads he truly wanted to, sparking his passion for FPV flying.

Achievements: In his first ever fpv competition, IGOW4, JALFPV placed 13th out of 1700 pilots, proving his skills as an incredible pilot. He also competed in TPW, making it to the pro tier and finishing 5th. Throughout the TPW season, he achieved the highest overall score, which is no easy feat. JALFPV has also participated in a few races, finishing 3rd place in his most recent whoop race at the Whoop Barn. Although he enjoys all styles of flying, he has a preference for freestyle.

Favorite Tricks: JALFPV’s favorite tricks include inverted yaw spins and 360 inverted powerloops, which, when done cleanly, keep the horizon perfectly level and look stunning in videos. Indoors, he enjoys combining juicy flicks and split s tricks for their smooth flow and demonstration of how agile whoops have become.

Training Regime: For JALFPV, success comes down to stick time. When learning a new trick, he sets up his environment to minimize damage to his quad, often using floor blankets and padding. He practices the trick repeatedly and, if it doesn’t click, takes his whoop outside for more space and time to perfect the stick movements. He prefers real-life practice over simulators, as he finds that simulators don’t translate well enough to actual flying.

Overcoming Challenges: Building and troubleshooting quads is JALFPV’s biggest challenge. Breaking things is frustrating, but knowing how to build allows him to get back in the air quickly. Keeping his fleet operational is crucial for maximizing stick time. Finding the right build configuration took time and led to some wasted money, but over time he dialed in his preferences and now avoida buying unnecessary or incompatible parts.

Equipment: JALFPV uses a TX16S transmitter, which he loves. For goggles, he switches between Fatshark Dominators for Walksnail and Skyzone 03os for analog.

Favorite Builds:

Indoor Build:

  • HM Diamond SPI ELRS
  • HM 702 26KKV
  • Flywoo Nano 1S V2 Cam
  • 31mm Gemfan Bi Blades

Outdoor Build:

Varies based on range and desired aggression.

Camera Angles and Rates (Roll, Pitch, Yaw):

For indoor flying, JALFPV prefers a low camera angle (10°) to fly slower and see where he lands. His rates are 100/1000/0.7 for roll and pitch and 100/1000/0.2 for yaw, providing a snappy yet controllable feel that allows for precise indoor maneuvers like Rubik’s cubes.

Tips for Beginners: JALFPV advises following recommended builds and making tweaks from there. He believes that experience is essential for building a perfect quad and emphasizes the importance of daily stick time.
