In this final test, you’ll be taking on a one-rip freestyle run, where you’ll push your limits to achieve the highest score possible within the time limit. Lesson Explanation

To complete this lesson, you’ll need to successfully accomplish all the main objectives by participating in the full version of our Freestyle Showdown competition. This version offers two formats: a 60-second indoor run or a 90-second outdoor run. Unlike previous lessons, there are no prefilled tricks—it’s entirely up to you to decide your approach.

You have full freedom to choose your path to victory. Whether you focus on raw freestyle to showcase your speed and execution, complete the KWAD objectives to earn a big score bonus, or tackle as many Tricks of the Week as possible to take advantage of the double points multiplier, the choice is entirely yours. There’s no pressure or requirements to do it all—what matters most is your final score at the end of the run. So don’t worry if you miss a trick or skip an objective. The goal is to find your own path to success and enjoy the challenge. It’s all about putting your newfound skills to the ultimate test.

Additionally, new multipliers like the Streak Bonus will boost your score for successfully competing tricks consecutively, while penalties like Repeat Reduction and Back-to-Back Penalties will keep things competitive by discouraging repetitiveness. Crashes or bumps between tricks will also reset your multipliers, so smooth, precise flying is key.

After your run, you’ll use our user-friendly calculator to score your performance based on the difficulty, precision, and execution of the tricks you chose. Once completed, simply upload your video and calculator to our submission form to finish the lesson.

This guide will help you understand the scoring system, including how new multipliers like Streak Bonuses and Tricks of the Week can boost your score, as well as how additional penalties like Repeat Reductions and Back-to-Back Penalties are applied to keep the competition fair and challenging. Here’s a couple of important tid bits about the calculator:

If you bump, tap, or crash between tricks, then select the drop down option called “between tricks” and then select the correct execution.
If you performed a unique, intentional, and repeatable trick that’s not in the tricktionary, use the “Custom Trick Builder” below the calculator to create your trick. Then, select “Custom Trick #X” from the dropdown menu above to earn points.

Lesson Requirements

Deadline: Saturday, October 20th at 8am… or before the end of the live stream
Time Limit:
- Outdoors Time Limit: The time limit is 90 seconds when flying outdoors.
- Indoor Time Limit: The time limit is 60 seconds when flying indoors. The time is reduced compared to outdoor flights to help balance the scoring, since indoor tricks are more difficult and valued higher to reflect their added complexity. The shorter time also means you won’t have to fly as long, which reduces the chances of crashing during your run.
- Time Extension: You can extend your video by 5 seconds to include the Freestyle Boot Camp logo at the beginning. This extra time is only for the logo and doesn’t add 5 seconds to your actual 60/90 second time limit for this run.
One Clip Rip: Your video MUST be a single clip. If you add multiple clips, only the first clip will be scored.
No speeding up your footage to reduce time between tricks. Speeding up your video will disqualify you from performance-based prizes and will have your total score removed from the leaderboards.
No cheating or exploiting loopholes: Just don’t. Taking advantage of loopholes may result in score penalties, and cheating could lead to a permanent ban from all future Freestyle Showdown events.
Passing the Challenge: To pass the lesson, you must complete all 3 main tasks. You do not need to participate in the bonus or prize challenges.

PSA: Important Updates for Lesson 10.

You may include up to 30 extra seconds in your video for skits. However, this extra time will NOT extend the 60/90 second limit for your Freestyle Showdown performance.
You may only use the indoor calculator if your ceiling height is 12ft or lower. If you’re flying indoors with a ceiling taller than 12ft (e.g., a warehouse), you will need to use the outdoor calculator, which has a 90-second time limit.
If your run includes flying both indoors and outdoors, you must use the outdoor calculator with the 90-second time limit.

To complete the challenge, you’ll need to successfully accomplish all the main objectives listed below. Each objective is designed to help you refine your skills and improve your control. Lesson Requirements:

Time Limit: The time limit is 60 seconds. You may extend the time limit to 65 seconds if you include the Freestyle Boot Camp logo at the beginning of your video.

If you signed up for a mentor group on the registration form, you will automatically be assigned to one of five mentor groups. Click here to find out which group you’re in, and use “Control + F” to search for your name. Once you know your group, head over to Discord and open the “︱mentor-group-assigner” channel. Click the emoji that represents your mentor group to be automatically assigned and gain access to your group chat.

Mentors are available to review your video clips or submissions and provide personalized feedback and advice upon request. Reach out for help with tricks, general advice, equipment recommendations, technical troubleshooting, or to learn from their personal experiences. Mentors will change groups every week, allowing you to receive different perspectives and advice. We’re here to support you every step of the way!

Rates and Camera Angles

It’s important that we set you up for success by making sure your rates and camera angles match your flying style. By fine-tuning these settings, you’ll build muscle memory to allow you to fly smoothly and perform tricks consistently without overthinking your stick motions. Building this foundation is important to your long-term success with freestyling.

I initially created an in-depth guide for rates and camera angles, but it ended up being waaay too long to include in the challenge video. I plan to release a standalone video or written guide hopefully in the coming days, which will be posted here. But for now, here’s the short version:

Rates

Rates are critical Betaflight settings that determine how your drone responds to stick movements from your radio transmitter, directly affecting its agility and responsiveness. The three main components of rates are Center Sensitivity, Max Rates, and Expo.

Center Sensitivity controls how responsive the drone is near the central stick position, with most pilots setting it between 100 to 250. This setting is essential for smoothing out your overall flying experience, making small adjustments more precise and less jittery.

Max Rates define the drone’s rotation speed, with typical ranges between 670° to 850°, although more aggressive freestyle pilots might go up to 1200°. Higher Max Rates allow for faster trick execution, while lower rates provide smoother, more controlled movements. Keep in mind that bigger drones may require a slower Max Rates due to the additional power and hang time they provide.

Expo adjusts the curve between center sensitivity and max rates, usually set between 0.3 to 0.55. Expo works alongside Center Sensitivity to ensure a smoother flight experience, especially when your sticks are near the center positions.

Camera Angle

Selecting the right camera angle is crucial for freestyle because each angle necessitates slightly different stick movements to perform the same tricks. While you may not notice a significant difference with a change of 5°, a change of 10° or more will be noticeably different. There are pros and cons to both lower and higher angles, but here are the main differences:
Lower angles between 10° to 20° allow for smoother, slower flights, making it easier to perform tricks like Matty flips, as well as fly indoors with whoops or in a proximity setting with a bigger drone.
Higher angles over 30° will increase your overall visibility and control when performing tricks like powerloops and trippy spins, which means that your overall trick execution will be more consistent.

Camera Angles Used by Mentors:

10°: MoeFPV and JALFPV
15°: Heads
25°: AkiraFpV and Cha Cha
30°: Tyrantt, Callisto, and inz
35°: FPVSammy

Challenge Objectives

To complete the challenge, you’ll need to successfully accomplish all the main objectives listed below. Each objective is designed to help you refine your skills and improve your control

Objective 1: Perform a double orbit around any object. Find an object or pole-like structure and perform two smooth and consistent orbits around it.
Objective 2: You’ll need to locate a different object and perform a double orbit around it, but this time in the opposite direction of your first orbit.
Objective 3: Fly through the smallest gap you can find to test your throttle control and accuracy.
Optional Bonus Objective: This objective is optional. You’ll need to find two objects and perform a figure 8 orbit around them by performing a single orbit around one of the objects and then switching directions while between them, and then finish by performing an orbit in the opposite direction around the second object. The Bonus objective is not only a great way to learn how to switch directions on the fly, but you will also earn additional leaderboard points for a chance at winning the leaderboard prize!
Optional Cash Objective: Perform any of the orbit objectives around the most interesting object you can find. The most creative and unique object will win a $10 PayPal cash prize. So go out and find something awesome to orbit!
Optional Pilot of the Week: This week, our judges will be voting on the most creative video to determine who will become our NewBeeDrone Pilot of the Week for Challenge 1. Tune in to the Pro Whooper Show on August 7th to see who will win the title, receive a $40 NBD Gift Card, bonus leaderboard points, and be featured on ProWhooper.com!

Video Requirements

Deadline: August 3th at 9am PST, or 5pm GMT
Time Limit: 60 seconds. This is the total time limit for the entire video, start to finish.
Objectives: Please note that while each objective must be completed in a single clip, you don’t need to combine all objectives into one continuous clip. However, it’s an added challenge to combine as many objectives into a single clip as possible, making it even more impressive to watch.
Passing the Challenge: To pass the challenge, you must complete all 3 main objectives. You do not need to participate in the bonus or cash objective.

How to utilize your mentor

Struggling with Tricks: If you’re having difficulty performing a trick, send video clips to your mentor. They will provide personalized feedback on what you’re doing wrong or how to improve your current technique for an overall smoother execution.
General Advice: Mentors are available to help with any aspect of your freestyle flying. Whether it’s adjusting your rates, camera angles, or refining your tricks, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Equipment Recommendations: Ask your mentor about the equipment and gear they personally use for freestyle flying, such as drones, cameras, and accessories. They can provide insights and recommendations based on their own experiences.
Technical Troubleshooting: Seek help with any technical issues you may encounter, such as tuning your drone, fixing common problems, or understanding flight dynamics.
Get to Know Your Mentor: Engage with your mentor to learn about their approach to learning new tricks, their training routines, and any tips or insights they can share from their personal experience.

Deadline: Submissions are due the following Saturday at 9am PST.
Length: Videos should be a maximum of 90 seconds, including intro/outro/skits.
Live Streams: There will be a review live stream every week to showcase all of the submitted videos.

Leaderboard

The leaderboard in Freestyle Bootcamp 101 is designed to track your progress in weekly challenges, helping you connect with pilots of similar skill levels and find friendly rivals. At the end of the season, the pilots with the most points will win top prizes. This system encourages a supportive, community-oriented environment while adding a touch of friendly competition.

Weekly Challenge Points

Submission Points:

25 points for an unattempted fail (participant did not attempt the challenge).
50 points for an attempted fail (participant attempted but did not succeed).
60-80 points for an almost (participant came close to completing the challenge but did not fully succeed):
- 60 points for significant progress.
  70 points for nearly completing the trick with minor errors.
  80 points for a very close but not quite perfect attempt.
100 points for submitting a video that meets the challenge requirements.
+10 points for completing the bonus challenge.
+10 points for using the Pro Whooper logo at the start of the video.

Pro Whooper Show Highlights:

+30 points for Mentor’s Choice (based on criteria like effort, creativity, and improvement).
+40 points for Top 3 video of the week.
+50 points for Best video of the week.

TPW Event Points:

Performance-Based Points:
Top 50% of participants will receive performance-based points between 50 to 150 points.
Bottom 50% will receive a set number of points (e.g., 50 points).
Specific points distribution will be based on placement (e.g., 1st place gets 150 points, 99th place gets 1 point, adjusted for the number of participants).

Additional Points:

Participation Bonus:

+5 points for submitting a video each week, compounding every week (e.g., +5 points for the first week, +10 points for the second consecutive week, +15 points for the third consecutive week, etc.). The bonus resets if a week is missed.

Creative Categories:

+20 points for the most creative video.
+20 points for the best use of environment.

Prize Pool: Over $4,500 in cash and prizes to be given away!
Weekly Participation Giveaways: Participants who submit videos qualify for weekly random giveaways, selected using a “spin the wheel” method.
Best Video of the Week: Each week, the mentor in each group will pick a pilot from their group based on specific criteria. These selected videos will be highlighted on the Pro Whooper show and ranked by each mentor to determine the pilot of the week. The winning pilot will receive a prize in recognition of their achievements.
Leaderboard Prize: Leaderboard Prize: The pilot with the most points at the end of the season will receive the top prize (TBD)
Grand Participation Prize: Each week a pilot participates, they will receive one raffle ticket. At the end of the program, a raffle will be held to determine the winner of the grand participation prize. (TBD)

Shipping Policy for Prizes

Due to limited funding, all physical prizes will be shipped at the end of the season unless the winner offers to pay for shipping to receive it sooner. Gift cards and PayPal cash will be dispersed throughout the season.

US and International Shipping

Shipping Costs vs. Prize Value:

If the cost of shipping is more than the value of the prize, we will offer to send the winner PayPal cash equivalent to the value of the item.
If the winner prefers to receive the item, they must cover the price difference over the value of the item. For example, if a prize is valued at $10 and shipping costs $18, we will offer $10 cash, or the winner can pay $8 for shipping.

International Shipping Contribution:

TPW will cover up to $20 for international shipping costs.
For shipping costs exceeding $20, the winner must cover the additional cost. For example, if shipping costs $30, the winner must pay the remaining $10.
