Lesson Explanation and Tasks

To complete this lesson, you’ll need to successfully accomplish all the main objectives by participating in a simplified version of our freestyle showdown competition. Each task is designed to introduce you to our competitive format while giving you a mid-boot camp review that puts your newfound skills to the test. In this lesson, you’ll be performing a 90-second freestyle run that challenges everything you’ve learned so far. You’ll start your run with the first three tricks we’ve prefilled into the calculator, and then it’s up to you to decide how you use the remaining time. You can either showcase the new tricks you’ve learned during boot camp or choose from over 92 unique tricks in our Visual Tricktionary—the choice is yours. The goal is to push yourself by going all out within the time limit. After your run, you’ll use our user-friendly calculator to score your performance based on the difficulty, precision, and execution of the tricks you chose. Then, simply upload your video and calculator to our submission form to complete the lesson.

Download the Calculator

Click here to download the Google Sheets Calculator and then click “File” and then “Make a copy” to begin using it. Please do not “save” a copy – this will create a .xlsx file, which is not compatible with our web app leaderboard systems. Please click here for step by step instructions on how to “Make a copy.”

Lesson Details:

  1. Task 1: Perform the first 3 tricks that are prefilled in the calculator in the following order:
  2. Task 2: Complete at least 10 tricks during your freestyle run. The tricks from Task 1 and KWAD count towards this total, and you can explore additional tricks from our Visual Tricktionary if you want to go beyond what we’ve covered. If needed, you can also repeat tricks to reach the total.
  3. Task 3: Correctly make a copy of the calculator and upload it in your submission
  4. Optional Bonus: Complete the KWAD objectives. These can be performed in any order and spaced out through your freestyle run.
  5. Optional Prize: Win the Freestyle Showdown with the highest score
  6. Optional Pilot of the Week Criteria: Most entertaining video

Additional Info

  • The Goal – Aim to achieve the highest score possible by going all out within the 90-second time limit. If you’re not in it for the competition, just take it easy, fly at your own pace, and focus on smooth, precise freestyling..
  • KWAD -KWAD objectives can be performed in any order and spaced throughout your freestyle run. Each KWAD objective will earn you a 250-point bonus, and if you complete all four, you’ll receive an additional 2,000 points, along with extra boot camp leaderboard points for completing the bonus challenge.
  • Trick Repetition – You’ll earn full points for performing a trick up to three times, but after that, no points will be awarded.

Video Requirements

  1. Deadline: Saturday, September 7th at 8am PST
  2. Time Limit: The time limit is 90 seconds. There will not be a 5 second extension during this lesson.
  3. One Clip Rip: Your video MUST be a single clip. If you add multiple clips, only the first clip will be scored.
  4. No speeding up your footage to reduce time between tricks. Speeding up your video will disqualify you from performance-based prizes and will have your total score removed from the leaderboards.
  5. No cheating or exploiting loopholes. We’ve simplified the Freestyle Showdown to help everyone get comfortable with the new format, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for any unfair advantages to ensure a level playing field for all participants.
  6. Passing the Challenge: To pass the lesson, you must complete all 3 main tasks. You do not need to participate in the bonus or prize challenges.
  7. If you’re new to video editing and need some help, then check out Shauny D‘s tutorial for a step-by-step guide on creating and uploading your video to YouTube. It’s a fantastic resource!
